We have big news!

If we are Facebook friends or you follow me on Instagram, you may already know this, but my husband and I have a little news to share. We are expecting our first child, arriving February 2017. We waited a little longer than average to tell everyone because I wanted to create our announcement while visiting one of our favorite places on Earth. During our Annual visit to the Outer Banks, North Carolina we set up the tripod and my camera and shot these images in less than 30 minutes. As most of you know I'm a perfectionist, and usually take much longer than 30 minutes to shoot anything, but this was our second attempt at these pictures. The day before we had gotten all dressed and ready, as we were about to walk down to the beach we ran into his parents, who were retreating from the beach because of the flies. I will tell you the weekend before we arrived, the Outer Banks was hit with Tropical Storm Hermine so this was the first sunny day and we jumped on it to do the announcement. Apparently the flies also thought it would be a great day at the beach, I had never experienced flies on the beach while in the Outer Banks before, I assume that was a result of the Tropical Storm as well as the rough ocean. So, we changed out of our picture clothes and stayed in for the night vowing to try again the next day, if the fly situation was better. Thankfully, after dinner the next day we still had light and the weather was lovely. We got changed into our picture clothes and headed to the beach. As I set up the shot and made my husband stand in as my focus point we quickly realized the flies were not done with their time at the beach. He kept swatting them from his feet and legs as they bit him and I kept telling him to stand still so I could focus. We made quick work of posing and smiling, I then had Ray take a few of just me by myself showing off my new baby bump. For years my husband has refused to touch my work camera for fear of breaking it. I was very impressed with how he framed and even focused the shot of me. These images are something I will now have forever and I will treasure as our child grows. I'm so thankful that he's more willing to use my "big Camera" as he calls it.

We headed back to the house and I quickly edited and posted our favorite couple images. We then headed out for Shave Ice to celebrate as our phones continually went off with notifications, phone calls and texts. The excitement was overwhelming. A secret I had kept for what seemed like forever was finally out. Everyone knew, I no longer had to hide my belly under big shirts, I could be comfy in my normal tshirts and tank tops. It was both liberating and so strange. I was actually pregnant, and it was finally starting to feel real.

The Wednesday after we returned home we had our Anatomy ultrasound scheduled. We had decided it would be fun to find out what we were having surrounded by our families, including a few who had to skype in. We didn't look at the Ultrasound photos and put them directly into an envelope. We took at envelope to the baker I use for my cake smash cakes. He was the only one who really knew what we were having until this past Sunday when we cut open the awesome cake he made.

Mickey or Minnie Disney Gender Reveal WonderlandPortrait.com

Since we are Disney Nerds I decided that our theme would be "Are you a Mickey or a Minnie?" and I created a few cute cake toppers with my Cricut machine. The Family arrived and we had dinner, all while the folks who were skyping in were chomping at the bit to get their phone calls.  Finally it was time.

cakecollage

We cut out a slice of cake, as we made the second cut and pulled the knife out I spotted it, the tiny little smudge of the interior icing on the knife and I couldn't believe I was right. I was the only one who saw that smudge and as I lifted the slice out of the cake, the cheers erupted that we are having a little BOY!

Gender Reveal Cake Wonderlandportrait.com

My gut and every other "guess the gender of your baby" old wives tale said I was having a girl. If I've ever attempted to guess what you were having you know that I'm wrong 99% of the time. So, I decided early on that If my gut thinks it's a girl I must actually be having a boy. Low and behold my logic was right and my gut was totally wrong. We made our little announcement on Facebook and Instagram and once again for the second time in 2 weeks our phones went crazy. I still can't believe how many people are so incredibly excited for us, and I'm so thankful to be surrounded by so many loving incredible folks.

As far as how I'm doing, I can't really complain. I was a little nauseous in the beginning but no morning sickness. I did get hit with a wall of exhaustion from the start and I've been functioning at 50% the last few months. I'm finally starting to feel a bit better with that, I'm no longer knocked out at 2pm everyday like I had been everyday for the first trimester. I'm still not 100% myself but I'm getting closer everyday. I had never felt exhaustion like that before in my life, I was falling asleep sitting up, like someone had slipped me a sleeping pill.   I also really hope this little guys arrives with a full head of hair or all this heartburn really isn't fair. Haha. All in all we're doing really well and we can't wait to meet our little man.

Obviously I will be taking the month of February off this coming year, January will be a very limited calendar as well, which surprisingly is almost booked up. I will be shooting Christmas Portraits from November 1st-Novemeber 30th only. December I will be able to accommodate Birthdays, Newborns, Maternity, Families and Milestone sessions on a limited basis.

I will continue to post updates on both the studio schedule and our little man, so stay tuned!

Outdoor Family Sessions Bucks County PA

Print It's that time of year again, the week after the Fourth of July when summer seems to start coming to an end. Very soon we will see school supplies in Target and recent graduates on their way off to college. It seems Summer is ending earlier and earlier every year and pumpkin spice shows up before we know it.

Now is when I encourage families to get together for their annual family portraits, before the kids go off to college and the little ones start their busy school sport schedules.  The end of Summer is a beautiful time for a family portrait, the parks are bathed in lush green foliage, and  the botanical gardens are still blooming. The beautiful greens really look amazing hanging on the wall as a canvas or framed portrait and even in the dead of winter, remind you of the warm summer sunshine.

Family sessions include multiple shots of the family all together as well as smaller groups and individuals of the kids. Not only is the end of summer a great time for families but equally great for maternity portraits and annual portraits of just the kids. We are so lucky to live in beautiful Bucks County PA. We have access to fields of golden grasses and wild flowers as well as amazing botanical gardens and even urban areas. Bucks County has really great diversity when it comes to photo shoot locations.  Here are some images from some of my favorite outdoor summer sessions. Enjoy!

Baby D Newtown PA Newborn Photography

Baby D was such a little sweetheart for his session, he didn't give me any trouble at all. We even got a chance to grab some outdoor shots while he was at my Holland Studio. Outdoor Newborn portraits are really becoming a favorite of mine, with this new green space right out my back door, these shots are even more convenient than ever.

Miss C is 3 | Doylestown Birthday Photographer

I've been Photographing little Miss C since she was 9 months old. It's always amazing to me how quickly these little folks grow up, it's exciting that every time I get to see them they are always bigger and more mature. When we scheduled this session for her third birthday portraits, in the back of my mind I was hoping that my favorite field of wild flowers would be in bloom. These Virginia Blue Bells only bloom for around one week in the spring, with the crazy warm weather we had a few week earlier I couldn't be sure I would be able to promise the wild flowers ahead of time. We really got lucky and the whole field was in full bloom! I had such fun photographing this session and I'm really happy with the results!

A New Wonderland for A New Year

newyear2016 The New Year is upon us folks. This past year has been unbelievably wonderful for me and my little business. I've met some great new people and photographed so many wonderful families, it's hard to believe how lucky I am. Everyday I get to do what I love, much of that is due to my clients who love my work and are so very dedicated to Wonderland Portrait Boutique, but I would never be where I am today if it wasn't for my Husband. Yeah, I got one of those this year too (Finally). It was a huge year for us, we had a quick small ceremony back in May and I wouldn't have done it any differently. He supports me and all my crazy ideas, weather it be painting our home in crazy bright colors with a hint of princess involved or my crazy leaps of faith in Business. For the last twelve years he has always been there to lend an ear, or tell me that I'm wrong, (very very wrong sometimes) and set me on a better path. Over the past few weeks I've been incredibly Quiet both here on my blog and my Facebook page. The 2015 Christmas season was the biggest I've had so far and it was wonderful seeing all of my regulars and a few new faces as well. Now some of those folks know a few of the awesome changes for 2016, but not all of you do. The past few weeks have been filled with not only Christmas sessions but tedious planning and designing the new Face of Wonderland Portrait Boutique.

Facebook-Cover-1

2016 is bringing many changes to my business. One of those First changes is my new logo, I finally broke down and let a professional handle it, and I'm so happy that I did, because I am in love with this New Logo. Along with the new logo we now have a little mascot that will be gracing many of flyers, handouts, and even my website. I think he is absolutely adorable and I feel like he really needs a name, so maybe in the spring we'll have a big naming contest.

I've been a busy little bee designing all new handouts, so you won't have to rely on a PDF that is going to get lost in the sea of emails in your inbox anymore. That's right a real tangible paper handout, it's an oddity these days but so much more efficient. Speaking of efficient, I've also put work into making communication more effective on my end. I've set up auto sending emails, for everything from Outfit suggestions to general before session information and session reminders.

This past Fall I sent out a survey and had overwhelming responses to guide me into this New Year. Based on the answers I've made modifications to many of our studio policies and packaging structures. First the New Year will bring a new simplified package structure. I've narrowed down my two most popular options, Digital files only and Create your own collection, which gives you Wall Art or an Album as well as All your Digital Negatives in the Size that best suits your needs. In 2015 Create your own Collection was THE MOST POPULAR Package by far.  We will also be carrying gorgeous new High End Pro albums in the studio, they are completely customizable with a ton of beautiful cover and page options  and will last for centuries to come. Another Policy that will be Modified late spring early summer is the View & Order, I hope by then to be able to offer my clients same day View & Orders. This will be available on most sessions but of course there are some sessions that take much more editing than others, such as Newborn sessions. The closer to the launch of the Same Day View & Order the more details I will have for all of you.

Now for the big news, in a few weeks I will be moving the studio about 5 minutes from my current location. As Much as I love the charm of the older building that I am in, I knew it was time to move on to a location with a higher amount of foot traffic. My hope for 2016, is to grow my business, and hopefully with all the great new things mentioned above we will grow by leaps and bounds. The Studio will now be located in Holland PA, I will also have Office Space in this location allowing me to work right in the studio everyday, which will mean I will have regular hours for folks to stop in and have a consult or pick up. Sessions will still be by appointment only so that I can fully dedicate my time to each client and their family. The new space will also allow me to take on larger family session during the winter months, which was not always possibly in my past smaller shooting areas.

2016 is going to be huge for us, I can feel it. I can't wait to see everyone this year and create beautiful art with all of my wonderful clients.

Happy New Year everyone!

Keep up on the all of the exciting new things on our Facebook and Instagram

Abington PA Newborn Photography Studio

Before I took  my annual vacation this year I got to meet this little lady at my studio in Feasterville for her newborn session. She did wonderfully, it was the perfect last session before a vacation week. Miss A was a perfect little angel, loved to snuggle, and slept so well. I couldn't get over her beautiful red hair, and chunky cheeks. Here are a few of my Favorite images from her session. Sweet Baby S | Warminster PA Newborn Photographer

This little lady was sure a sweet little girl, slept like an angel and oh so snugly during her session. (I consider getting to snuggle babies as a major perk of my job.) Mom and Dad brought a few special items along with them for our session, one a hat, the other a chair. The hat was so cute, a little pink and purple bull dog hat, they are all about bull dogs and told me they have rescued a few in their time. They also have a "fur-child", which is a bull dog of course, and she is the princess of the house. I think Baby S is going to give her a run for her money as the princess and they may need to agree to co-rule the house.  The Second item was a rocking chair, it was a very special item to mom because it belonged to her father as a child. Baby S is a little too young to be rocking in a rocking chair just yet, so my pal bear hung out in it while she napped peacefully. Hopefully in the next few months we can show how she grows while reaches new milestones using the rocker and maybe for her first birthday we can get her rocking away just like her grandfather did when he was a little one. Owls & Tree Stump Slices | Langhorne PA Newborn Photography

July and August have been two busy months for Maternity and newborn sessions. I hung out with mom and dad in July for their Maternity session, August brought my chance to hang out with this little lady at the studio for a few hours. The theme of her nursery is Owls so mom brought along an owl hat to grab some shots in for hanging in her bedroom and we got a ton. Mom and dad also brought something else along, now I have posed newborns in and on a number of crazy things in my years as a photographer, but this was a first. When mom told me about the "slab", as we started referring to it, I didn't exactly understand what she was talking about. Well, as it turns out, I had it all wrong in my head, the "slab" was just that, a Slab of wood cut from a tree and used as the cake stand at their wedding. Once I saw it I totally got what she was saying, and really wasn't aware of a term for a flat piece of wood cut from a tree, so slab fit perfectly. I love the idea that it was used as their cake stand and now their little baby girl was napping on it. I've encouraged mom to bring it back for little Ms. R's 6 month milestone session this winter, I think it would be a great piece to show how much she grows.

Yardley First Birthday Portraits

This happy little lady visited me at my Feasterville - Trevose Studio for her first birthday portraits. She was a funny little lady, and so very happy and expressive. Her expressions run the gamut but I would say that the most variety was in the number of different smiles I got from her. We captured everything from, small sweet smiles to big laughing grins, it was fantastic, such a smiley little one. Check out all of her happy faces!

Waiting for baby C | Yardley Maternity & Family Photographer

A few months back I found out that this family was expecting their second child, a little girl. I was super excited for them, since I know them so well, I've been photographing their older daughter since she was just 3 months old. She is one funny little girl, for a while now she has called me Ms. Doughnut, I don't know if she can't say Dana or if she associates me with trips to the Coffee shop up the street, either way I find it hilarious.  I can't wait to see her with her new little sister this coming fall, I think she will be an excellent big sister. 4 Big Reasons You Need to Schedule a Family Portrait Session Now! | Bucks County Family Photographer

WHY ARE FAMILY PORTRAITS SO IMPORTANT??

Richboro Child's Photographer WonderlandPortrait.com

Tell Your Story!

I recently surveyed my friends and clients about their experiences and opinions on photography. One of the questions in the survey asked if they had taken a photo with their child/family. I was pleasantly surprised to see that majority of those who completed the survey had in fact answered Yes to this question. My heart swelled at this information. You'll often hear me preach about the importance of photography, but I'm a photographer so DUH Of course I feel it's important! Through the survey though I found that so many of you also see this importance.

Now on the Flip-side I was also rather disappointed in some of the answers, one in particular hit home for me, the question was " As a woman I would invest in photos of myself to pass down to my Children. True or False". The result was about an even split ( actually 45% Yes and 55% No). Many have heard the story of why I set out at a young age to be a photographer. When I was about 11 years old a Family member lost her mother to Cancer, she only had one photo of her mother. In the Photo her mother was hiding behind someone else trying to avoid the camera, because "she hated to have her picture taken". Even at the age of 11 I felt this family member's sadness at the fact this was all she had left.

I make sure my husband and I have our Portraits Made at least Bi-annually. No we don't have kids yet, but I want to make sure they know the love that they came from when they finally do arrive. Once we have a child I will make our Family Portraits an annual occurrence. I know that might be a pipe dream right now, I know that life with kids gets crazy and busy. I know that money will be tight in those first few years, but I also know that the money spent on portraits will be an afterthought when I'm sending my son or daughter off to college. I know that I will miss the tiny baby curls after their first haircut, and the missing front teeth once the big kid teeth come in. I know I'll miss all these things about my kids when they have far surpassed these life stages, but what will my kids miss of me if I'm not in any of those pictures with them? Will they miss that time I had that really weird haircut when they were 3 years old? Will they miss the way that their chubby little baby legs wrap my waist as I hold them at a Year old? Will they know how important their father is to me now, before they were even here? No. They aren't going to remember these things, because they will be too young to remember these things. A photograph can remind them. A photograph can help them see. They'll be able to see who we are before, during and after them.

Your Children LOVE YOU!

Do you know the biggest reason moms give me for booking a family portrait session?

"I'm never in any of the pictures, it's always the baby/kids and my husband."

"I'm never in any of the pictures"

Just let that sink in a moment. I applaud these Mamas for realizing that they were missing and for doing something about it. I know I will be that mom. This may surprise some of you, knowing my husband is an amazing artist, but he refuses to learn how to use my SLR. Already the ratio of pictures of him is way higher than pictures of me. Now in all fairness he's more worried he will break it than actually refusing the knowledge, but still. So ladies I feel you, my scrapbooks are uneven too. Having someone else take the picture is the best way I can figure to show up in pictures in those first few years.

In the last year I've seen this article pop up in my Facebook timeline more than a few times. If you have never read it, it's basically about how much your child loves you in spite of the flaws mothers see physically in themselves. ( I warn you now you might cry reading it).

After moms tell me they are never in the pictures I tell them how a family session with Wonderland Portrait Boutique works. I always start off with the family shots then move on to each parent with the kids, the kids together and individually and then mom and dad together. 'Mom and Dad together' is probably the biggest objection I get for small family sessions "Oh we don't need that" "I'd rather the rest just be the kids". I don't know if people feel silly or what, but the Parents together is always a favorite shot during my extended family sessions. During these sessions generally Mom and Dad are now grandparents with older kids, it's the older "kids" (who are now parents themselves) that encourage their parents (grandmom and grandpop at this point) to get a photo together. So obviously it's important to the children that they have a nice photo of their parents. So when you say to me "we" don't need that, don't be surprised if I tell you, It's not for you, it's for the kids when they are older.

It's Good for your Kids!

The reasons to schedule an annual family portrait far out weigh capturing this moment in time.

There is also the fact that displaying family photos in your home improves your child's self esteem and gives them a sense of place and purpose. This past February Design Aglow posted an article to their blog on this very subject. Here are a few quotes:

“I think it is really important to show a family as a family unit. It is so helpful for children to see themselves as a valued and important part of that family unit."

Displaying photos prominently in the home sends the message that our family and those in it are important to one another, and we honor the memories we have experienced,

“It says we love you and care about you. You’re important.”  '

A LOT Changes in a Year!

The photos below are from two sessions, almost a full year apart. The Family session with the pink outfits is from May 2014 and the mommy and me session in teal is from this past June (2015). I looked at these together for the first time today, and this is a perfect example of how much changes in a year. Although dad isn't in the second session, because it was a special for mother's day, he came to the session, so I can tell you he looks pretty much the same, as does mom. Their Daughter though almost looks like a totally different kid. Look at the little sass and attitude she has now and THAT HAIR!! Seriously the cutest little personality, and so funny! Last year at around 1 she wasn't as responsive to me, which I'm not ashamed to admit, that is just how it goes some days. One year olds sometimes just don't care that I am there and on a mission to photograph them.  This year though she was my best pal, and posed. In just a year, actually 11 months, her personality has blossomed and really started to show to the point I was able to capture it in Photographs. Now lets not count out that first session. It really shows how she loved to interact with her parent at that age, which will be huge to her when she is going off to college.

Mr J. | Baby's 1st Year Plan Graduate | Newtown PA Baby Photographer

Funny story... I actually photographed this little guy's cousin last year for her first birthday, the same time I was working with Mr. J's mom to set up a first year plan for him.  I did think it was interesting that I had two clients with the same last name, but didn't think of it much further than that. Turned out they were in fact related and didn't even realize they were both using Wonderland Portrait Boutique. How's that for a coincidence?

Over the past year I've photographed this little guy from before birth all the way to this session that we photographed his first birthday portraits and cake smash. His big brother tagged along to this session so we popped him in for one or two shots as well. During the whole session, big brother knew that there was a cake waiting for the end and did not miss a chance to remind his mom and I how much he wanted some of that cake! The cake was absolutely gorgeous as well, it was custom made by the Birthday Boy's aunt. I was really impressed by the quality and the work put into it, because making beautiful cakes is not her full time profession (I know, can you believe that?)!

Mr. J did fantastic for his formal shots, not missing a chance to show off how well he is walking now either. It never seizes to amaze me how quickly they go from a newborn to a walking little person full of smiles and energy. It really feels like yesterday that we were photographing his newborn portraits. He was not shy when it came to the cake either, these boys are definitely fans of eating cake. Mr. J did stop and look at his mom with the expression of "Really? I can play with this and get messy? Are you sure Mom?", but as soon as she encouraged him to go ahead he dove right in and thoroughly enjoyed his birthday cake. Check out and enjoy the adorable-ness that is Baby J.

Mr. E is Three! |Superhero Birthday | Richboro PA Birthday Photographer

Some sessions I am reminded of the endless amount of energy kids possess, this was one of those sessions. Mr. E is fast, like a speeding bullet, and has an amazing superhero narrative in his head. Just like a superhero he was ready to help me at a seconds notice, and get into "disguise" to fight evil doers. I met him and his family at Tyler State Park in Newtown PA and at first he was really shy, but it did not take him too long to open up and start having a great time. I knew that mom was bringing along his favorite set of capes that his grandmom had sew for him and that he loved to wear them. We started off with some formal family photos and then let him have some fun with his costumes. He showed off some of his flying skills and his best Batman and Captain America Poses for me, then we were off to the field. I had brought along my favorite little red radio flyer tricycle that was just his size, and he loved it.

This has to be one of the favorite sessions I've photographed lately, I really love this age. While they can be crazy fast and change directions often, I love that they are so uninhibited. I love that a three year old will just show you who they are and be them self. He loved pretending that he was super when he put that cape on, and had no qualms about it.

There is no "perfect" picture when you are photographing children, but there is an honest picture. A picture that shows them, and who they are at this age, they may not be perfectly posed and that's ok. I mean really how often are two and three year olds actually sitting still in one spot? It's honestly a rarity that I get more than five minutes of being able to instruct them on what to do.  Mr. E did great with my suggestions on which game we should play next and that really let his personality shine. Through our interaction I was able to capture amazing action and personality.

Check out the great time he had during our Super Session at the Park.

Mr. H Turns One! | Yardley Birthday Photographer

A year really does go by incredibly quick when it comes to children and aging. I tell people this almost daily but, even I forget sometimes. When Mr. H's Mom emailed me to set up his first birthday session I thought for sure she must be a couple months early in planning, it couldn't of been a year since his Newborn session could it? You probably remember him, he is my little Rock and Roll baby from last May. He was so small for his newborn session we were able to put in in a snare drum. In fact I have the Guitar picture below on my studio wall in canvas, it's still one of my favorites. Rock and Roll Newborn Pictures Ideas Philadelphia Bucks County PA WonderlandPortrait.com

Yup. A lot has changed in a year as well, he hasn't just grown he's become very fast. We met up at a local garden in Bucks County PA to photograph some family photos as well as birthday portraits of just Mr. H. As always I started with the Family then him with just his Mom and one with just his Dad. Once he realized that he could walk around he really got comfortable and wanted to explore. We had the "formal" family shots out of the way, so we let him go and I captured some great little personality shots of him. By the end I was calling him "the man of many faces", because he has some great expressions. A few times I captured the image and had to take a moment to control my laughter, he had just the funniest expressions, and they only lasted for a second. The faces I captured are just golden. Mom and Dad are going to have great memories to share with him if he ever out grows this expressive face stage.  As you look through the photos below be prepared to giggle at the expressive faces of Mr.H. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Mommy & Me | Breastfeeding Portraits |

Since my friend Rhianna had her son back in November we've been talking about how she would love to do breastfeeding portraits. I have done a few in the past but the moms wanted to keep them private, which I totally understand and respect. Rhianna is probably one of the most open people I have ever met and told me I could post whatever I wanted. This was a really exciting session to plan. We had these photos planned for later in the week, but I stumbled across this amazing field of flowers while out on my daily walk in the park. I called her right away squealing and praying that she was available that night, since I had no idea how long they would last. Thankfully her schedule allowed some time that evening to get together. For something last minute it truly turned out Magical. When I photograph a mother feeding her child I always try to focus on the bond that they share, that is truly what breastfeeding portraits are all about. Now I know there are people out there who will dismiss this post as gross, weird or disgusting, but I REALLY beg to differ. I was breastfed as a baby and I hope with the grace of God my body allows me to do the same for my children one day. This is not a post to put down those who choose not to breastfeed or are unable to do so. I understand that not everyone's body allows it. I also understand in this crazy world we live in not everyone can invest the time and energy into such a time consuming and sometime frustrating process. Breastfeeding is hard, and it takes great dedication and determination.

This post is to help normalize breastfeeding. To the people who say that seeing a woman breastfeeding in public is gross, I say don't look, that issue belongs to you, she is doing nothing wrong. Every other culture around the world sees breastfeeding as a normal, natural process of a woman nurturing her child. For some strange reason here in the US women are shamed for it, I just don't understand our culture. Very often when photographing Newborns, moms cover up, as to not offend me or ask me if I mind that they breastfeed, my answer is always the same "If it doesn't bother you, it doesn't bother me." Then I proceed to hold a normal conversation with them while the baby nurses.  My dream is to see a country that women no longer have to ask permission to feed their child, where they aren't gawked at like a circus sideshow while their child nurses and most of all where people stop calling breastfeeding gross. This is the choice that these moms made, why can't we as a culture support that choice?

So this Mother's Day weekend let celebrate this. Let's make a conscious choice to support all moms in their decisions, whether it is to breastfeed or whether breastfeeding wasn't for her. Every Mom is fighting a hard battle everyday, these are choices they've agonized over. Just because I support Normalizing Breastfeeding does not mean that I do not support a mother who couldn't or chose not to breastfeed. Every woman's choice in this matter is her own and how dare anyone for shaming or prosecuting them for it. As the old saying goes "Mother knows best."

Toddlers & Cooperation. The never ending story.| Southampton PA Children's Photography

The Art of Cooperation | How to make your child cooperate for a Portrait. | Bucks County Children's Photographer | WWW.WonderlandPortrait.com

I recently posed a question to my Facebook followers.

"What’s the most overwhelming thing about having your photo taken?"

Majority of them stated, getting their children to cooperate. One of my long term clients wrote this: "Mine use to be child behavior, but now that you do my pictures it's so easy. Sometimes it's better just to walk away and let you do you thing. They always come out better that way!"

Now honestly I didn't pay her to write that (even though it sounds that way), but I am going to share the advice that I gave her many moons ago. This is one of my biggest tips, even though I have a ton, but I'm leading with the biggie.

Children are very sensitive beings, which I'm sure you know.  If you're happy, they get happy. If you're sad, they get sad.  If you're excited, they get excited. If your stressed , they get stressed. Let me repeat that last one again, for effect. If you're stressed, THEY GET STRESSED.

So lets touch on this one a little bit further. Mom's train of thought :: Oh My Goodness Bobby better sit still in one spot and listen to this photographer. He better smile. He better not embarrass me. What if he is rude? What if he just ignores her? I'm going to take away his iPad time if he's not good, I swear::  Or, well, something along those lines at least. So the day of your session arrives and now these thoughts have been rolling around in your head for a while, the scary fuzzy purple monster, known as stress, is growing. You can feel the anxiety expanding. You hit my studio doorway or our meeting place at the park and it's oozing from your pours. I can feel it and so can your child.

Let's first address what "good" means for a portrait session with Wonderland Portrait Boutique. For me, I want your child to be him or herself. Every kid has their own unique personality, and I want to see it. All normal rules go out the window during a session. For example a few weeks ago I told a child put their feet on my couch with shoes on! Eek! She looked at her mom for approval as I said "I'm sure this is a no no at home, but that is why I bought a faux Leather couch, I can wipe it down." Mom nodded at her with approval, she happily popped her feet up.  The only times I will really expect parents to correct a child is if they are doing something dangerous. If your two year old wiggles out of the pose I put him in, you don't need to correct them and threaten to take away their post session treat. That is just how a two year old is, and I know that I will have to continually put them back into a pose. When a kid is having a good time at a session they get silly and wiggly, it comes with the territory. On the opposite end are shy children. Shy kiddos generally just need a little bit of time to open up and get comfortable. With these children I find that I just need to speak softer to and play some silly games to gain their trust. All children go through stages, they just hit them at different times. I try to always be adaptable to each child's personality.

So now let's talk about that scary purple monster mom (or dad) has been carrying around for the last two weeks.  When it comes to children's photography you can't have any lofty expectations of Gap Ads. All the children on my website and facebook page are normal kids, I never work with professional models. All these children are showing off their own authentic personalities. I've learned that asking a bright bubbly child to pose with a serious face doesn't always work out. Same thing with a shy child, they aren't going to be comfortable being photographed in a very populated location. You know your child better than anyone. Who are they? Do they love books? Would they like to show off their action figure collection? What is it about Bobby that make him who he is?

Once my long term client (mentioned above), realized her son is just a little funny man she was ok with the silly banter between he and I.  He is allowed talk back to me during a session. Obviously, all parents want their kids to be respectful to adults, and he is, when we aren't shooting a session. When he's in front of my camera, he knows it's ok to call me a poopie head and he loves it, of course taking full advantage. Honestly, he makes me laugh so hard during sessions now, the things he comes up with are hilarious. That is him, that is his personality.

I am by no means a child psychologist, I've just seen a lot of kids in the last 12 years, and I've picked up on the trends. I've seen parents loose their cool way too often  and I've found most of the problem is the parent's expectation. Most folks are on Pinterest now and see these amazing fun poses and images. The thing that non photographers have to remember is you can't compare your everyday to someone else's highlight reel. That is exactly what Pinterest is, a Highlight reel, it's the best of the best. I'm not saying that Pinterest worthy sessions aren't a possibility, what I'm saying is that expecting to duplicate an exact pose and expression isn't always a realistic goal. Letting your kids be themselves is going to yield your best result.

Parents striving for a "perfect" portrait often stress themselves out, which the child feels and acts appropriately to something they feel is now scary. They want to grab mom or dad's leg or be held. Every one of those parents says to me "I don't know why he is acting this way, he's never done this before". It's that common, I honestly hear it often.   I don't want to come a across as I'm telling people how to parent their kids. I want my clients to have the best possible portraits.  I know what it takes to have a successful session and I realize that parents want this information.

A successful session starts with getting your child involved and excited. Since this post is already pretty long, I've decided to make this advice the subject of my next newsletter.  I'm going to send my top tips for a successful session directly to you. How I've Recently Failed | Yardley Newborn Photographer

So I have to admit I've had a huge FAIL Happen recently. I became a victim of letting life happen to me and quickly loosing track of time. Almost weekly parents tell me how they didn't believe that the first year of their child's life goes by too fast until it's gone and they are now planning a Cake smash with me. I woke up the other day and realized it's APRIL!

Yeah I know my phone tells me daily, conveniently on the screen I unlock about a million times a day, but really how many of us actually pay attention to that. The last few months I've just been floating through life and letting it happen instead of making things happen and celebrating the everyday. I've fallen behind in all aspects of my life. I've lost touch with friends, in fact I still have Christmas presents hanging around I never shipped out (guess I should get on that).  I've had to scramble to get projects done because all the sudden the deadline is on my door step faster then I thought two weeks could ever go by. I've seen home projects fall by the wayside. Oh and forget about that scrapbook I started on New Years Day, that just sits. There are also a few crochet projects that are sitting on the shelf gathering dust too.

Yet in the midst of all this, I'm always on the go. I always have something to do. Are they always the things that are most important to me? Eh. Probably not, but that's life. That is how it works. We become all consumed with the trivial little things, like trips to the mechanic's, or adding up the year's receipts and we miss out.

We miss out on all the great things in life.

Mainly I'm writing this post because I realized that my sweet niece is now 2 Months old. At the same time I'm realizing I never shared more than a few of her newborn portraits and I've already taken more portraits of her for Easter. So here is a giant Post of Alyssa and a Promise to myself to take life by the horns and direct it where I want to go, instead of waiting for things to happen to me.

Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.- Dr. Suess

Yeah. See the days that I always choose for picture day also seem to coincide with Alyssa's Diva days. Her first Newborn session was, well to put it nicely, a challenge. They brought her back a week later JUST to do the tire poses and she was a perfect angel. I got a ton of shots of her. The Day that I chose for her Easter session, just happened to be the day she was laughing in the face of the sandman and missed her morning nap. I don't know if it was that she was tired or really hated the dress I picked up for her but she gave me some interesting expressions. I've never had a little one be so uninterested in the funny noises and faces I'm making at them. Normally these would not be photos that I would even share but her tiny little faces are pretty funny when looked at all together.   My Favorite dress image has to be the close up face in the center of the next collage, she looks really unimpressed with me. (I think I may print and frame that one just to keep me grounded day to day.) We Finally coaxed a few grins out of her once we put her in her "casual" outfit.  Also Please note that I feel the final image in this post should be captioned "Really guys? Bunny ears?"

Mr.N |First Birthday Cake Smash | Newtown

I've had a lot of babies and birthdays in the studio recently. I've had six month baby milestone sessions, newborns, and this little guy for his birthday. He was super funny and was a fantastic little model.  He sat and posed for a good long while, then he realized he could get up and go, at that point the chase was on. One is a very busy age, when everything needs to be discovered, so this was no surprise. The surprise came when we sat him down in front of his cake he sat there enthralled with his cake. He attempted to stuffed handful after handful of that blue icing right in his mouth, but much to our delight missed the mark a few times, getting it all over his face. Dad helped him dive past the icing into the actual cake and oh boy did little man love that. At that point he was grabbing handfuls of cake, totally in the cake eating zone, it was as if nothing could break his focus. Normally, I have babies who play in and eat the cake for a little while and then get bored of it, Mom had to practically tear him away when it was time to clean up. This little guys really cracked me up with his laser focus on the cake.  Check out his awesome model shots followed by some cake destruction. Miss G | Yardley PA First Birthday & Cake Smash Photographer

In the past year I've had a few of my regular clients move away because work was transferring them. This family is one of those families, they are moving over seas to Europe in the next few weeks. Mom contacted me early for her little one's first birthday session because of this. I've known mom and dad for years and photographed them before their little girl arrived last year and in previous years for holiday cards. (See last years Maternity Session Here) I'm excited for them as they begin a new adventure but I'm also a little sad because I know I will only get to see their family grow from a distance, through Facebook and what not. I was so happy to be able to photograph Little Miss G's first birthday before they took their big trip across the pond to their next adventure. She did fantastic. She wasn't in the least bit worried about getting messy and loved the cake. That being said it was a bit of a challenge for mom to get all the cakes off as she kept some clutched in her hand, Maybe a snack for later I suppose? I had one Wonderland Family move across the country this past Fall. While I love seeing the fun pictures they post from their new home in California, it's also kind of sad for me. I know that I missed out on their youngest's first birthday, and sadly I don't know anyone in their area so I was unable to refer them any photographers. I know another Wonderland Family who will be moving south in the next month or two. They will be too far to visit my studio for regular sessions but we've decided maybe we can get together when I'm on my annual vacation in North Carolina, as that will be just a short drive for them.

All of my Wonderland Families are special to me, I like to think of every single one as a friend, and I truly miss them. I wish all of them luck in the next chapters of their lives and I plea to them, keep posting updates to Facebook and Instagram. I can't wait to see who your little people grow up to be.

Awaiting... | A Winter Maternity Session| Upper Makefield PA Maternity Newborn Photographer

There is an old saying, "The Cobbler's children have no shoes". Which basically means that the cobbler puts so much time into other people's shoes he doesn't have nice shoes for his own kids. Well, nothing rings truer in my own life. Yes, Ray and I have our Portraits taken bi-annually, but I haven't had a proper family picture with my family for quite some time. Honestly they are all pretty hard to convince (sound familiar?), even the photographer has trouble getting her family in front of the camera. My Brother and his girlfriend are expecting their first child this January.  I've been hounding them for months to let me photograph their Maternity portraits, they had all plans of just skipping them. I wasn't about to let this moment pass with out documenting it. Finally they gave in, if for no other reason than to shut me up { ;) }  The beginning of November our schedules actually met up, which during the Christmas season is a miracle for me.

I always laugh at the amount of people my brother knows, and this day was no exception.  Our session only last about an hour, but with in that time my brother managed to spot one of his friends driving by while standing in the middle of a field posing for the blanket shots. Anyone who says my brother isn't a great multitasker has never witnessed this phenomenon. Because of this I have great faith that when left in her daddy's care, my new niece will always have an eye on her, no matter what else he is doing. He doesn't miss a trick!

So now it's just a waiting game to meet the baby, the next few weeks are going to drag on for sure. I suppose in a few months I should start working on getting my parents into a real full family portrait, once the baby is a bit older of course.
