I met this soon to be mama and daddy at Tyler State Park for their maternity portrait session. Mom and I talked on the phone before the session and discussed bringing along their pup, which I always encourage. I consider fur babies to be a huge part of the family and should always be included in some way.

A Few Weeks later I got to meet their adorable baby boy at my Holland PA Studio.

Awaiting... | A Winter Maternity Session| Upper Makefield PA Maternity Newborn Photographer

There is an old saying, "The Cobbler's children have no shoes". Which basically means that the cobbler puts so much time into other people's shoes he doesn't have nice shoes for his own kids. Well, nothing rings truer in my own life. Yes, Ray and I have our Portraits taken bi-annually, but I haven't had a proper family picture with my family for quite some time. Honestly they are all pretty hard to convince (sound familiar?), even the photographer has trouble getting her family in front of the camera. My Brother and his girlfriend are expecting their first child this January.  I've been hounding them for months to let me photograph their Maternity portraits, they had all plans of just skipping them. I wasn't about to let this moment pass with out documenting it. Finally they gave in, if for no other reason than to shut me up { ;) }  The beginning of November our schedules actually met up, which during the Christmas season is a miracle for me.

I always laugh at the amount of people my brother knows, and this day was no exception.  Our session only last about an hour, but with in that time my brother managed to spot one of his friends driving by while standing in the middle of a field posing for the blanket shots. Anyone who says my brother isn't a great multitasker has never witnessed this phenomenon. Because of this I have great faith that when left in her daddy's care, my new niece will always have an eye on her, no matter what else he is doing. He doesn't miss a trick!

So now it's just a waiting game to meet the baby, the next few weeks are going to drag on for sure. I suppose in a few months I should start working on getting my parents into a real full family portrait, once the baby is a bit older of course.

Miss M - Yardley Newborn Photographer

After photographing Mom & Dad for their maternity session { Seen Here }, I couldn't wait to meet this little one. There was a plan all set for when she would arrive and, as has happened before, she didn't really follow the plan. Little miss arrive about a week before she was expected, she was just ready to meet the world!  I've photographed babies for about 10 years now and I have to say Miss M is probably the BEST Sleeper I have ever experienced. She was out like a light for our entire session, until of course it was time to eat and then she ate and was out once again. Now normally I would never complain about such a cooperative, sleepy newborn, but Mom and Dad wanted a few pictures with her eyes open. This became my challenge of the day, to get a few peaceful eyes open shots. Normally I can just swaddle little ones up and grab a few shots this way, which keeps their hands from stretching out in front of their faces. Well as soon as she was swaddled, she was asleep. The irony in all this is, I'm normally trying to get babies to fall asleep, this time I was trying to wake her up. I tried everything that normally wakes babies up during sessions and she slept through them all, this went on for about a half hour. I handed her off to dad in defeat and he laid her down on the sofa to start dressing her to go home and open her eyes popped. I quickly got her set for a few more shots, and mom and dad got their open eye images too. Bucks County Newborn Photographer www.WonderlandPortrait.com

Portrait Locations, in your own backyard. | Northampton PA Children's Photographer

Bucks-County-PA-Child-Photographer I decided to add this as a quick blog post because I've had quite a few folks ask me about the location of the last two images I shared on Facebook. When choosing locations with a client, I often ask them if there is any place special to them or anything they had in mind. The most common response is usually something about "not having any ideas" and "can't we just go to a park or something." Which is all well and good, and I have a handful of locations I love to use, so that's no big deal to me.   This Client isn't like that, we generally seek out special locations to match the theme of their child's birthday, (Click here to see last year's session) which generally has to do with what little man is into at this age.   This  year we were searching for a big number 3 and we planned on making use of his match box cars since they are his world right now. Well we were stumped and couldn't find the right location we were looking for.  Finally Mom mentioned to me that they had a little creek running through their new back yard, and thought it would be nice to maybe do some car pictures in the driveway or something, more of a lifestyle shoot.  I nearly fell off my chair when she sent me pictures of the stream.

This is what she sent me.

www.WonderlandPortrait.com

www.Wonderlandportrait.com/blog

As you can see it's just a plain ol' stream, not a super fancy location. I told her I would stop by within the next week and check out the lighting in that area to determine the best time of day for our session.  I found some extra time after a meeting at the studio one evening and stopped on my way home. I caught Dad finishing up mowing the lawn and said to him "I'm really glad "J" told me about the  gorgeous stream you had in the back! It's going to be perfect!" He gave me a look like I had six heads and said " Well I don't know if I'd call it gorgeous, but it's nice".  At that point it hit me, I really do see things in a different way than the average person. I look at a location and I see texture, color and light, I just ignore all the other stuff because I know what I can do with it. I've always said I could shoot next to a dumpster if I had to, because I know I can and that I can make it beautiful.

So really, when we choose a location for a session it isn't always about fancy landscaping or gazebos. It's about the feeling of the spot, the color of the light, how the colors harmonize, and the textures that can be pulled out and enhanced.  I know I'm totally going in to artsy mode right now, but that is how I look at it, with the eyes of an artist. I don't just take pictures, I create, this is my creative outlet and very often I nerd out about it, but in the end that is what sets me apart.  I am a nerd for this stuff.  So forgive me when we talk about a location for your session and I start rambling on about light and texture, I can't help it.

I wanted to share this to open some eyes to a behind the scenes look into the planning of a session, and how simple it can be. The very best location could very well be right under your nose, or in your own back yard.

What Size Do I Choose?? ( Yardley Portrait Photographer, Bucks County PA )

Today I want to address something that I experience with each and every Client. The dreaded question, "What Size do you want?". Usually this question elicits responses akin to asking how many Lamas there are on Earth. There are a lot of shrugs, some educated guesses and then the few Lama experts who know the exact answer. Most of my regular clients have become Lama experts at this point and know who wants what and what will go on their walls. Today I'm going to address the "Shruggers" and "Educated Guessers". The best advice I can give to someone is to decide where they want to display their portraits first, possibly even before the session is booked. This is a very important part of the process that often gets skipped, people know that they want portraits but don't know what to do with them after the fact. This is usually what spurs the question of "Can we just get portraits on a cd?" but unfortunately CD's don't look very nice on the wall and they also fail or go bad. A printed portrait is the best way to preserve your memories even in this digital age.

Ok, so now you know what wall or room you want to display your pictures in now how on Earth do you decide on sizes?  You would be amazed at how many people are  surprised by how small a 16x20 really is when I show them. 16x20 sounds quite large to most folks but in reality it is about the size of or smaller than a standard carry on rolling bag.  Ok that kind of still sound big, but lets look at it on a wall.

Newtown Family Photographer Wall Display

As you can see on this wall the 16x20 looks like a postage stamp, but when choosing size it is all relative to the wall and what else is on that wall. There is no one size fits all when it comes to decorating with pictures. As much as I advocate for large portraits on the wall, even I have 5x7's displayed on my walls at home. 5x7's are generally considered a table top size, because hanging them on the wall leaves the viewer at a loss because so much detail is lost in viewing far away. My 5x7's are part of a larger collage display on a small wall in my home (Which we will tackle in another blog post).

Any-who... Back to the task at hand. Wall displays being all relative. What do I mean by that? Well lets look at an example.

Newtown Family Photographer Wall Display

As you can see the same wall with a 24x36  instead of the 16x20 looks much more balanced and pleasing to the eye, also the detail is much easier to see. Now if this wall was smaller or had other items on it we may want to cut it down a little or if we want to hang more than just one image on the wall. You can create some really great wall displays with multiple images and sizes that will really knock people's socks off. I do caution against doing too much, there is a fine line between a beautiful artistic image gallery and that wall behind grandma's couch with every 5x7, she has ever received, of each of her 12 grandchildren. In other words it can get out of hand pretty quickly. Of course wall galleries are a topic for another blog post but just for argument's sake lets check one out:

Newtown Family Photographer Wall Display

Well that is all I have for now, I'll be elaborating more on Wall Displays and how to keep image galleries balanced in the next few weeks.

We could all use a little Grace ( Philadelphia Newborn Photographer )

January has been bustling with babies this year. Many of my wonderland families have new additions arriving in 2014, and I'm so excited to meet them all.  This is one of those families who has just welcomed their third child, a little lady. I also photographed their younger son, and now middle child, when I was first starting out on my own. I'm so thankful that these families keep coming back to me with all of their milestones. I always say that one of the best parts of being a children's photographer is seeing the kids as they grow. I'm not with them everyday so I'm  always a surprised by all the new talents they have to show off every time they come to have portraits taken. As I said she is the third child and her two big brothers are just bonkers over her already. After her 2 year old brother woke from his nap he hung out and watch the session patiently till it was his turn too.  He was so excited when he got to sit with "baby Gracie" and take a picture. I just love how he said her name it was adorable.

Check out all of Miss Grace's fab accessories, at just 9 days old she was already all decked out in some of the cutest little things.  The Scarves Grace is wrapped in came all the way from the Netherlands just to be used for this session. One of her fabulous aunts lives there and brought them back when she came home to Philly to meet little miss. Mom had brought along quite the assortment of headbands and hair bows already so it was no problem finding something that matched each one of the new scarves. Philadelphia_Newborn_Photographer

New Year New Look

Well it's here! 2014 is upon us already, 2013 seemed to pass in a blur it went by so fast. 2013 had a lot of changes for me both personally and business wise, so I thought it would be nice to start 2014 off with another big change. I gave my business a little "face lift", if you will.  I've created a new logo and updated my colors to match my style and personality a little bit better. I went for a more fun, softer style and added in a few brighter shades of my favorite colors. Meet the new Face of Wonderland Portrait Boutique!

Waiting for Miss "?" Bensalem Maternity Photographer

Bucks_county_Maternity_photos3 Today I bring you a lovely maternity session from a few weeks ago. These pictures were a little hush hush because mom and dad decided to not share the baby's name with anyone till she was born. It was a big back and forth over what they were going to name their little angel, at one point it was compared to "Who shot J.R." just for the suspense factor alone.  I will share Little miss "?"'s Newborn pictures in the next few days but for now here is the maternity session.

Bucks County Communion Portraits

Communion_Bucks-County It's that time of year! The time when little boys and girls are preparing to make their First Holy Communion. The stores are packed with beautiful white dresses and handsome suits, hair appointments being made and parties being planned. I still remember my First Holy Communion, it was such an exciting day and I loved wearing that fluffy white dress. My mother still has the portrait hanging on the wall.

So you've got the outfit, booked the party, and invited the family, what else is there left to do? To schedule your portraits of course! I'm currently booking April and May for both studio and on location Communion portraits. Heirloom Communion portraits will hang on your walls for years to come, they should be a beautiful representation of this important moment in your child's life. What would be lovelier then a crisp white suit or dress in a lovely garden setting? I'm so excited for this time of year and I can't wait to meet you and your little lady or fella.

New Boutique Book { Trevose Photographer }

When FedEx shows up at my door with boxes it's generally my print orders from the lab, and I'm like a kid on Christmas. Well today they brought me this Beauty... Image

This is the studio sample of my Boutique Books, and I absolutely adore it! To begin with the quality is just out of this world. It has super thick pages that are printed on actual photo paper and not on press paper like other books. There are also no gutters in the centers of the pages, so nothing goes missing, which is great for all those fun wide images I like to spread across two pages. The pages of this book are standard surface but you can also have them printed on Metallic paper as well. To change things up a bit I had the cover of this book done in Canvas, which has a really great texture. The Boutique Books come in 8x8, 10x10, and 12x12, with either a leather or custom cover.

Custom Albums are a great family heirloom to flip through on family nights and pass along for generations to come. Many people love the fact that they get so many of their images without having to put them all up on the walls and can conveniently store them on a shelf for till they want to reminisce.

Boudoir by Wonderland Portrait Boutique { Bucks County Boudoir Photographer }

It's that time of year again! Valentine's Day is quickly approaching.Many of you already know that I also offer Boudoir Portraits for the ladies. This past fall I put out a casting call for average women to apply to be models for these sessions, so I'd like to thank all of them for being such gracious volunteers. I'd also like to thank My Makeup Artist Brittany Renee for helping me make these sessions happen. Brittany is a Professional Makeup Artist, who attended Makeup Designory in New York City, and she is so awesome at what she does. Brittany knows things I've never even heard of before, like contouring, who knew makeup could give you a facelift! I was even more floored when she pulled out an air brush machine to apply foundation. One of the things that most impressed me about working with Brittany is not only her amazing professionalism but how clean she keeps all her brushes and equipment. In between each client all of the equipment she uses is meticulously sanitized, which is a sign of a real makeup artist who has put in her time to learn her craft.

Many people ask me what they need a Pro for since they put on their own make up every morning. Well there are a few reasons:

  • A makeup artist knows how to apply  make up properly for the camera and lighting. Which doesn't seem like a big deal, but it makes the difference when that first exposure is taken. Have you ever had someone take your picture and your face is a different color then the rest of you? It could have been because of the power or shimmer on your face reflecting the flash.
  • The face is their canvas and they work to accentuate each of their client's best features, they access the shape, tone and texture of your skin and work accordingly.
  • If you've ever glued your own eye shut with eyelash adhesive (I have) you can understand the importance of having a Professional apply your lashes.
  • They are trained to keep their equipment and work areas clean and sanitary. They also know what could happen to you if those strict guidelines are not met, which isn't something most amateurs could prevent, because they simply don't have the knowledge.

Really I think the best way to explain why is to let her work speak for itself, here are a few before and afters of our boudoir models from this past fall.

The Colors of Philly { Philadelphia Photographer }

Hey Folks!

This past Sunday, June 17th, Father's Day I had a Great opportunity to photograph a wonderfully fun event. The Awesome Color Me Rad 5K Race took place in Fairmount park right in front of the Please Touch Museum here in Philly. The whole thing was a big Party Everyone seemed to have so much fun running and being pelted with a rainbow of colors. I was stationed right at the first color station which was Blue, it was definitely  some intense shooting, a few hundred blue people racing at you all at once can be a bit intimidating. This was my first attempt at Sports Photography of any kind, and I'm really Please with the Results. I put together a Quick Slideshow to Showcase some of my Favorite shots from the Day, I captured about 2,200 in the 4 hours I was At the Race.  If you happened to of Ran the 5K and you are interested in Purchasing the images from that Day Please Visit the Flo-Foto Website.
